Description: WestEd is seeking a senior education leader with a passion and commitment to supporting educational equity and excellence. A strong candidate will have at least 15 years of successful experience working within state and/or local education settings to improve outcomes for all students, especially those disadvantaged by income, race, ability, and language. This position is for work within federally-funded technical assistance and research centers and will be responsible for leading projects in the areas of school improvement, implementation of the Every Student Succeeds Act, educator effectiveness, standards and accountability and other areas that are priorities for states in the Northeast, Southeast, and Mid-Atlantic regions. The ideal candidate will have expertise and a successful track record working within state education agencies or as a technical assistance provider to state agencies to lead systems change in education and have extensive understanding of the structure, operations and policies of state education agencies and education laws and regulations.

WestEd - a nonpartisan, nonprofit research, development, and service agency - works with education and other communities throughout the United States and abroad to promote excellence, achieve equity, and improve learning for children, youth, and adults. WestEd has offices nationwide, from Massachusetts, Vermont, and Georgia, to Arizona and California, with headquarters in San Francisco.

As part of a comprehensive array of services, the Learning Innovations Program (LI) at WestEd provides direct technical assistance and research services in the areas of school improvement, special education, educator effectiveness, equity and cultural competence, school choice and other services that support enhancements in state and local systems of education. The education technical assistance work focuses on transforming educational systems in partnership with state and local educators, families, and communities to strengthen teaching and learning and to ensure equity so all students thrive. LI's projects include a wide range of services and supports including technical assistance and professional learning related to curriculum design and implementation, school transformation, equity, leadership development, and state and local policy development. WestEd's work, while varied, is focused on impacting outcomes for students through the development and cultivation of educational systems, practices, policies, and cultures that result in learning for all students. The Learning Innovations Program team consists of approximately 75 staff currently conducting technical assistance projects with 20 states, including all those on the eastern seaboard.

Lead project teams to design and provide content related technical assistance and accompanying resources to support clients' goals.

Provide expert consultation and strategic planning for clients, especially related to the implementation of the Every Student Succeeds Act.

Lead projects addressing educator quality and equitable access to educators for the Regional Education Laboratory.

Serve on the Learning Innovations Senior Leadership Team.

Design and manage technical assistance projects for state educational agencies related to school and district improvement, educator effectiveness, assessment and accountability, early learning and college and career readiness.

Implement evidence-based and results-oriented technical assistance.

Mentor junior staff to grow their knowledge and skills in technical assistance and organizational change.

Develop and maintain relationships with high-profile clients, partners, and funders characterized by respect and trust.

Promote cross organizational partnerships and relationships, both within WestEd and externally.

Develop products and resources that build and enhance the reach and impact of WestEd's services.

Develop a portfolio of technical assistance work with target states in the Northeast region.

The successful candidate will have experience in the following areas:

Be a strategic thinker and planner with deep knowledge of the external supports necessary for state and local education agencies to build and implement effective education systems.

Have an established track record in coaching others to provide quality technical assistance services to state agencies and/or other large educational organizations.

Understand how to manage projects and human resources to ensure work is of the highest quality and impact.

Possess knowledge of state and federal education policies and regulations as well as the research, issues and trends in the field of education influencing states and public education, e.g., accountability, educator and leader effectiveness; school and systems transformation, equity, and continuous improvement.

Be able to travel regionally up to 40% of the time.

Possess excellent organizational, administrative, managerial, interpersonal, and written and oral communication skills.

Demonstrated ability to manage contracts and budgets; demonstrated ability to work collaboratively and effectively with diverse staff, colleagues, and clients from across the organization and across the nation.

Be able to lead diverse teams and individuals across and outside the organization to reach established goals, including strong competencies in facilitation, consultation, and coaching.

Have a strong record of ability to prepare proposals and develop new business in response to competitive and sole-source opportunities in the public and private sectors.

Possess an advanced degree in Education Policy, Administration or related field.
