annual conference 2010

Many new and promising efforts are under way to link research to practice. Recent federal and state accountability mandates have created new incentives for schools and districts to choose policies and programs that improve student performance. These incentives provide additional motivation for educators at the school and classroom level to utilize research and data-driven models to determine which instructional practices provide the greatest benefit to their students. Organizations, including the What Works Clearinghouse and Campbell Collaboration, are analyzing, synthesizing and disseminating evidence supporting a variety of educational interventions. Partnerships between researchers and state and local education agencies, supported by initiatives such as the Institute of Education Sciences’ Regional Educational Laboratory Program, are providing practitioners and policymakers direct access to high-quality scientifically valid research and technical assistance.

The theme for the 2010 annual research conference, “Research into Practice” reflects these recent developments within the field of education.  Symposium, paper and poster presentations that provide a rigorous test of cause and effect through a randomized design or high-quality quasi-experimental design, and have clear practical implications for how to improve schools and classrooms, will offer the best fit for the 2010 conference.  As causal evidence accumulates, it provides the basis for quantitative syntheses and careful interpretation of larger bodies of research. Such syntheses represent valuable contributions to the literature and are also appropriate for this meeting.  In keeping with the theme, we welcome presentations that address how to bridge the research-to-practice divide and that offer empirical tests of efforts that are necessary to translate evidence about “what works” into practice.
