Presentation Formats
Symposia
Symposia provide the opportunity for investigators whose work focuses on a similar topic to present their findings in a single session. Each symposium proposal should include a justification that describes the contributions of the individual papers and elucidates the connections among the studies.
The symposium proposal will include abstracts for each of the individual papers (three to four in number). During the conference session, the symposium organizer will be responsible for overall logistics and will be expected to provide a general introduction. The symposium proposal should also identify an independent discussant to provide comments on each paper and the symposium as a whole. Each symposium will be two hours in length.

Panels
Panel sessions are moderated discussions with two to three panelists in addition to the moderator. The session organizer may be the moderator. Panels should be closely aligned with the conference theme and outline a plan that includes audience participation during the ninety minutes allocated.

Individual Papers
Individual papers with a similar focus will be assembled into a single session by the program committee. During the conference, the session chair, invited by the program committee, will be responsible for introducing the session, keeping track of time, and initiating the discussion after the final paper presentation. The length of the entire session will vary (ninety minutes to two hours), depending on the number of individual papers (three to four).

Posters
Presenters in the poster session will have the option of using physical or electronic display. Poster presentations may be uploaded to the conference website, to allow pre- and post-conference viewing of materials, in addition to the abstract.

SREE encourages diversity in its membership and in Society activities, including active participation in conferences.
The Spring 2018 Program Committee welcomes submissions across the conference program that include the presence and perspectives of individuals from diverse backgrounds, including those associated with race, ethnicity, and gender.

To what extent does the study or session align with the conference theme?

Theoretical Criterion
To what extent does the study or session extend understanding of key phenomena or relations of interest for educational effectiveness?

Pragmatic Criteria
Does the study or session identify a problem that has important implications for educational effectiveness?

To what extent might the study or session inform critical decisions that will impact education policy or practice?

Methodological Criteria
To what extent has the study employed elements of research design that attempt to eliminate potential sources of bias that may interfere with valid cause-and-effect conclusions?

Does the study include valid and reliable measures of key variables and outcomes?

Is the study’s sample adequately representative of the population of interest?

If the study uses real or simulated data, does the analysis provide compelling evidence that the proposed methods are an improvement over existing methods?

Submission Procedures:
All individual papers and posters should be submitted in an abstract, with a limit of 1000 words in a single spaced document using 12 point font. This space limit does not include references, tables or figures.

Each element of a symposium or panel submission will be subject to the same limit but should be submitted within one complete document that includes the overview for the symposium or panel (500 word limit for a symposium or panel justification).
For example, a symposium with 3 papers would have a word limit of 3500 (1000 x 3 plus 500).
A panel with a moderator and 3 panelists would have a word limit of 3500 (1000 x 3 plus 500).
In each case, the space limit does not include references, tables, or figures.

Abstracts may, but are not required to, utilize the following component headings:

  • Background / Context: Prior research and its intellectual context.
  • Purpose / Objective / Research Question: Description of the focus of the research.
  • Setting: Description of the research location.
  • Population / Participants / Subjects: Who, how many, key features or characteristics.
  • Intervention / Program / Practice: Should including details of administration and duration.
  • Research Design: An essential element in a SREE abstract.
  • Data Collection and Analysis: Methods utilized in collecting and analyzing data.
  • Findings / Results: An essential element in a SREE abstract.
  • Conclusions: May include recommendations and limitations based on findings.

Symposia, panels, papers, and posters that describe research in a developmental or exploratory stage will frequently not utilize all headings, but should specify clear hypotheses and describe whether models that explore causal inference will be constructed at a later stage.

Symposia, panels, papers, and posters submitted to the Research Methods section are likely to adapt headings where empirical studies were not employed to illustrate the methodological practices under consideration. In this section, research should: (a) be relevant to problems of drawing causal inferences in education, (b) be situated in a historical context with attention paid to citing prior methodological research, and (c) provide detailed information regarding data designs, simulation designs, and/or mathematical derivations that support causal inference.

Conference Program Limit
An individual may be a presenting author (in a symposium, paper session or poster) or panel participant (moderator or panelist) no more than twice in the conference program. This restriction does not include serving as a symposium organizer, symposium discussant, panel organizer or paper session chair. The presenting author must be identified in the abstract submission process for each paper or poster and will be designated with an asterisk in the conference program.
