SREE 2023 Conference: Highlights from a Successful Event

Embedding Equity for Better Methods, Evidence, and Practice

Successful conferences often involve a combination of well-organized sessions, engaging speakers, and opportunities for networking, and SREE had it all this year! The 2023 SREE Conference held in Arlington, Virginia in September attracted a diverse and widespread audience from those within the education research field.

The conference kicked off with several pre-conference workshops where attendees were introduced to new skills they can use in their own work. Special programs were held for new members and first-time attendees, graduate students, SREE's affinity groups, JREE, and much more. Over the course of four days, participants had the opportunity to attend more than 70 sessions, explore poster presentations, meet with philanthropic funders, visit the career and opportunities forum, and check out the exhibitors.

Roderick J. Little, University of Michigan, delivered the 2023 Hedges Lecture on missing data in empirical studies, and AJ Crabill, Desoto Independent School District, addressed how to improve student outcomes when school boards fail educationally vulnerable students, as this year's Keynote.

This year's program committee dedicated many months to planning a memorable conference experience for the SREE community. Our 2023 conference chairs, Constance Lindsay, University North Carolina - Chapel Hill, and Laura Peck, Abt Associates, deserve a big thank you for making this happen! We'd also like to recognize the 2023 Section Chairs for their hard work over the past year:

Registration Open for 2024 Data Equity Workshops

SREE has engaged with We All Count to offer three workshops to equip researchers with hands-on practice applying the details of data equity to their work. Each workshop consists of 2 parts: Part A and Part B. In Part A of each workshop, we will spend 90 minutes exploring the concept of data equity, highlighting a specific set of data equity choices and associated tools, and demonstrating the particular topic's mathematical and human consequences. In Part B, we will facilitate a 90-minute interactive session where we reflect on an example together. We'll explore the various options that emerge when the data equity tools are applied and make sure all your questions are answered. These workshops aim to provide a rigorous, innovative, and supportive environment for researchers to enhance their skills and knowledge in data equity. Between workshops A and B, participants will be encouraged to apply the tools they've learned to the example, take notes, formulate questions, and prepare for discussion.

Feel free to contact the following with questions/suggestions/comments: Lashawn ([email protected]), Sarah Peko-Spicer ([email protected]), or Wendy Castillo ([email protected]).

Open Science in Educational Research

Greetings from the SREE Open Science in Educational Research affinity group!  SREE 2023 marked the first SREE conference since the establishment of the Open Science in Educational Research affinity group. On Friday morning, the Open Science affinity group sponsored a session on open science standards at JREE. Sean Grant led began with a presentation by reviewing current open science practices at JREE. In April 2022, JREE became a “Level 1” implementer of all standards in the TOP Guidelines, requiring authors to disclose whether they have used each of the open science practices in the TOP Guidelines. Sean described this transition, and he provided data on how many JREE authors reported using various open science practices. Then, we had an open discussion about potential future directions for JREE to further increase open science practices (e.g., Registered Reports) and how to promote Open Science practices within educational research more broadly. The session was well-attended and well-received, and we hope to continue to offer these sorts of sessions at future SREE conferences. On Friday evening, the Open Science affinity group hosted an Open Science reception. SREE provided a variety of great appetizers, desserts, and drinks, and reception attendees had the opportunity to mingle and discuss Open Science in a fun, laid back environment. Over 25 people attended the reception, and we are hoping that they will bring their friends and colleagues to next year’s event! Finally, Betsy McCoach represented the Open Science Affiliate group at the SREE Board meeting. The Board of Directors was supportive of the affinity group and eager to hear about our current plans and future goals. On that note, over the next year, the Open science affinity group needs to work on developing an organizational and leadership structure. If you are interested in becoming more involved in the Open Science affinity group, please contact Betsy McCoach ([email protected]). If you are interested in joining the affiliate group, be sure to select that option when renewing your SREE membership this year or contact the SREE office if you want to join before your next renewal. Thank you, SREE for making our first conference such a positive and memorable experience!

Introducing WestEd’s New CEO, Jannelle Kubinec

On October 2, Jannelle Kubinec assumed her new role as WestEd’s CEO, following the retirement of Glen Harvey, who served as CEO for 26 years. WestEd’s Board of Directors selected Kubinec to serve as CEO following an extensive nationwide search.

“We believe that Jannelle will provide exactly the leadership necessary to help WestEd and its partners and clients navigate the complex environment currently surrounding education and human development,” said WestEd Board Chair Ken Coll. “She will help WestEd maintain our laser-like focus on equity and excellence, as we continue to conduct and applyrigorous research to address the wide range of challenges in education and human development in order to reduce opportunity gaps and help build communities where all can thrive.”

Kubinec brings more than 24 years of experience improving outcomes for children, youth, and their families through research, policy, and technical assistance. For the past 12 years  she served as an accomplished leader at WestEd supporting the organization’s growth, innovation, and impact. Notable contributions include helping guide California through a once-in-a-generation redesign and transformation of its K-12 funding formula and accountability system and serving as principal architect and manager of a diverse team of researchers and policy experts to craft the California Master Plan for Early Learning and Care. The Plan has resulted in historic increases in funding, improved support for the workforce, and expansion plans to include all four-year-old children in Transitional Kindergarten.

For the past four years, Kubinec has served as WestEd’s Chief Administrative Officer, leading the creation of teams and organizational units for Learning and Development; Employee Engagement; and Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion; and helping to bring equity and inclusion to the foreground of WestEd’s operations. She also managed the organization’s growth through the pandemic and its evolution from an office-based to a hybrid work environment.

“I am honored and excited to serve as WestEd’s CEO,” said Kubinec. “I deeply value the high priority WestEd places on research, excellence, integrity, equity, and impact, and the organization’s talented, skilled, and dedicated staff are second to none. I look forward to working with them to continue their important work to achieve positive outcomes and sustainable improvements in education and human development.”

Under Harvey’s leadership, WestEd established itself as one of the nation’s premier nonpartisan research, development, and service organizations working to promote excellence, achieve equity, and improve learning for children, youth, and adults.

“We owe a great debt of gratitude to Glen, for her visionary leadership in helping WestEd grow to an organization with more than 1,000 full-time staff nationwide and an annual revenue of more than $200 million,” said Coll.  “For more than 25 years, Glen has helped build WestEd into an exemplar in education reform, best practices, and innovation. Under her leadership, WestEd has received recognition as among the best in its class for its work in research, development, and service and achieved a first-rate reputation. Thanks to her vision and dedication, WestEd has made and will continue to make a significant difference in the education world.”

“I am certain that Jannelle will serve WestEd with great distinction, helping to further our decades-long goal of helping every learner achieve success,” said Harvey. “This is a pivotal time in education and for WestEd. It requires strong leadership and a deep commitment to our mission and vision. I am confident that Jannelle will provide exactly the leadership needed to address the challenges that lie ahead.”

AIR Data Tools Explore Disparities in Educational Opportunities and Outcomes

Education is the key to success and upward mobility, especially for students who are low income or from traditionally underserved groups. But evidence has shown in past decades that education has not been acting as the Great Equalizer. As part of its mission-focused work, AIR develops tools that help policymakers, practitioners, and researchers better understand inequities and develop possible solutions. Two interactive dashboards launched in 2023 provide access to data on educational opportunities, outcomes, resources, and more.

  • The COVID-19 and Equity in Education (CEE) Enrollment Explorer helps researchers, policymakers, and educators analyze pre- and post-pandemic student enrollment trends at the state, region, district and school levels in six states. The interactive data tool designed by AIR experts is sortable by a range of school, community, and student characteristics; and provides a broad, in-depth view of how states, districts, and communities responded to the COVID-19 pandemic.

  • The Equity in Education Dashboard, developed by the Department of Education's National Center for Education Statistics (NCES), provides  unprecedented access to key findings and trends on the current state of educational equity in the United States, specifically on topics such as racial, ethnic, and economic segregation; and supportive classroom environments. Researchers, educators, and community members can use the tool to explore disparities in access to learning opportunities and differences in student outcomes. AIR collaborated with NCES leaders to support this work and will continue working to optimize features of the dashboard.
