SREE 2022 Conference Recap

From Reckoning to Racial Justice: Centering Underserved Communities in Research on Educational Effectiveness

SREE's Annual Conference held in September was a great success! Individuals from across the country converged in Arlington, Virginia to connect in-person for the first time since 2019. Attendees participated in informative sessions, listened to an engaging Keynote and Hedges Lecture, and enjoyed good company. Plenty of fun was had with the 360 photo booth, a surprise giveaway on the last day, and numerous opportunities to network. Check out photos from the conference below!

This year's program committee spent months planning a memorable conference experience for the SREE community. Our 2022 conference chairs, Nathan Jones, Boston University, and Saroja Warner, WestEd deserve a big thank you for making this happen! We'd also like to recognize the 2022 Section Chairs for their hard work over the past year:

Early Childhood Education: Meghan McCormick, MDRC
Postsecondary Education: Shaun Dougherty, Vanderbilt University
Education in Global Contexts:  Ha Yeon Kim, New York University
Academic Learning in Education Settings: Robert Ochsendorf, National Science Foundation
Social and Emotional Learning in Educational Settings: Carly Robinson, Brown University
Teachers and School Leaders: Constance Lindsay, University of North Carolina - Chapel Hill
Organization of Schools and Systems: Allison Atteberry, University of Virginia
Use of Research Evidence across Settings: Cara Jackson, Abt Associates
Research Methods:  Vivian Wong, University of Virginia

For those of you who completed the post-conference survey, thank you for providing your feedback on the conference! We randomly selected 2 respondents to receive a free 2023 SREE membership. Congratulations to Meghan McCormick, MDRC and Matthew Truwit, University of Michigan!

Critical Perspectives in Quantitative Methods Series

SREE recognizes an overdue need to investigate and foster in our research communities’ perspectives, strategies, and tools to promote research that is culturally responsive and that works toward the goal of equity in education along dimensions of race, socioeconomic status and gender, among others. We have been pleased to offer a webinar series on critical perspectives in quantitative methods that is open to the public. The co-sponsors for this webinar series include the Association for Education Finance and Policy (AEFP), the American Educational Research Association – Division L, and the Council on Public Policy in Higher Education (CPPHE), a Council of the Association for the Study of Higher Education (ASHE).

The most recent webinar, Designing a Critical Race Mixed Methods Study, presented by Jessica T. DeCuir-Gundy, University of South California, was held on October 21. The recording to this webinar can be found on our website, along with the rest of the webinars in the series. There will be one more webinar in late 2022 or early 2023 to complete the series and that information will be shared when it is available. Please email [email protected] with any questions.

This series is offered at no cost and registration is required for security reasons. Registration and information on the series can be found here.

Data Equity Workshops

Since June, SREE has been offering a series of short workshops to explore practical tools and choice points in aligning educational research with equity goals. Each workshop is facilitated by the We All Count team and is an independent event. You can attend as many or as few as you’d like and you don’t need to attend the previous ones to attend the next one. Recordings are made available for those unable to attend the live workshop. Register here.

Upcoming Workshops:

Monday, November 14, 2022, 1:00pm - 2:30pm Eastern Time
Key Elements of Equity for RCTs: How to Embed Transparency and Account for Cultural Bias

Monday, December 12, 2022, 1:00pm - 2:30pm Eastern Time

Summer Fellowship

To date, nineteen SREE student members have participated in the Summer Fellows Program, created in collaboration with EdFunders LEAD Impact Group. Students spend the summer conducting a literature review on a topic selected by the funding organization, with the goal of providing information the organization can use to inform its philanthropic work.

Thank you to the 2022 fellows: Vianney Gavilanes - University of California, Berkeley; Kaylee Matheny - Stanford University; Tianyi (Diana) Feng - Harvard University; Rebecca Levine - University of California, San Diego; Yohimar Sivira-Gonzalez - University of Louisville.

Executive summaries and additional work products from this year's fellows can be found on the SREE website.

We will begin accepting applications for the next summer fellowship program in early 2023, so stay tuned!

Strategic Plan

Strategic Data Project logo

In August, the SREE Board of Directors approved updated bylaws and guidelines for affinity groups.  The goal of the changes to the bylaws was to create more opportunities for members to get involved in the society’s activities and to promote transparency. The guidelines for affinity groups were created to offer a mechanism for subsets of SREE community members to self-organize around common interests.  The guidelines were intentionally made broad in order to make it easy for these groups to form and to create a clear relationship between SREE and the groups.  Currently, SREE has two affinity groups:  Women in Quants and SREE-Researchers of Color.

If you are interested in getting more involved in the society, send an email to [email protected] letting us know of your interest!

You can see the bylaws and the affinity group guidelines on our website.

Institutional Member Corner: Harvard Strategic Data Project

In October, the Harvard Strategic Data Project launched Cohort 14 of our two-year fellowship! We welcomed 44 fellows, including future data leaders who successfully completed our rigorous screening process and were placed as new full-time employees at SDP partner sites, as well as folks who worked in data roles at prospective SDP partner organizations whose leadership nominated them to participate. These fellows are all now full-time employees at an array of education organizations, including school districts, state education agencies, systems and institutions of higher education, and education-focused nonprofits. Over the next two years, these fellows will execute on key analytic projects for their organizations, receiving support and training from SDP along the way to build out their own analytic and leadership skills. Learn more about our new cohort: https://sdp.cepr.harvard.edu/news/strategic-data-project-welcomes-cohort-14

This fall, our applications opened for candidates interested in joining the next cohort (Fall 2023 – Summer 2025). The next deadline is 9am ET on January 18, 2023. Applications can be accessed from http://sdp.cepr.harvard.edu/apply. For candidates seeking to join a new organization, we require 4 years of work experience, a master’s degree or PhD by summer 2023, a strong quantitative skillset (ability to go beyond descriptive analytics), strong communication and emerging leadership skills, and a passion for improving educational outcomes for all students.

Join our informational webinar on Friday, November 18th at 12:00pm ET to learn more about becoming a Strategic Data Project fellow. Register here: https://sdp.cepr.harvard.edu/event/sdp-fellowship-informational-webinar-9
